From humble beginnings as a simple takeaway joint for homemade Indian food, Jay’s Indian food has grown to a business popular with expatriates and regional Swiss guests who love spicy and authentic Indian cuisine.
Jayesh Kumar (Jay to the rest of us) originally hails from Mangalore in South India. Arriving in Switzerland in 1989 he studied Hotel Management and worked for the Hilton chain of Hotels. However, unable to shake off an entrepreneurial itch, he decided to start his own takeaway service for homemade Indian food. The response was so positive, within a year he was able to start his own restaurant.
The concept behind JAY’S is pure simplicity. Jay didn’t want a menu with too many options and wanted to focus on light, simple and fresh Indian cuisine. JAY’S Indian Restaurant soon became known as the go-to place for authentic Indian cooking, and after 11 years, Jay was given the opportunity to move premises to Ackermannshof.
After 3 years in Ackermanshof Jays finally decided he wanted to change and go back to basics ! Smaller and down to earth as the first restaurant !
He temporarily moved to the location known as MilchHüsli, literally translated as the milk house, where he maintained a pop-up kitchen 3 nights a week until he could welcome to his guests to his formal venue of Johann by Jay at St. Johanns-Ring! He looks forward to welcoming guests, new and old, to this stunning location while maintaining his reputation of amazing food that brings a taste of India to your palate.
